A B O U T

Drawing is the basis of everything I do. It is like a hidden language that operates directly out of the nervous system. This often manifests itself through other forms of media which separately take into account properties of collage, painting and fine print to produce a material outcome best termed collectively as ‘flat sculpture’.

In addition to the poetic variables associated with language, I find this process of making ultimately presents a way to interfere with an established aesthetic or pattern of meaning through perceptions of value, class, or identity which has always been the thematic foundation for what I do.

I work and live between Manchester, London & Scotland.

C O L L E C T I O N S

Work is held at the Tate Collection as well as the Tate Library for artist’s books who also hold a substantial amount of self-published titles. Works are also held in the collections of the Whitworth Art Gallery at the University of Manchester, as well as the ongoing collections of The Serving Library, Soho House, London, & The British Council Art Collection along with various private collections. .

Presently, I am Reader (Associate Professor) in Fine Art, Manchester School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University. I am also External Examiner on the MFA at City & Guilds School of Art, London. Previously, I have been Lecturer at Glasgow School of Art, as well as External Examiner at the University of Reading, UWE, Bristol, & Leeds Beckett University.
